What Sedation Dentistry Can Do for You

Does going to the dentist make you nervous? Sedation dentistry could help.

If you find that you haven’t been to the dentist in a while because even the thought has you shaking, then you are very likely dealing with sedationdental anxiety or phobia. Many people experience some degree of anxiety surrounding a dental visit, but if it’s keeping you from getting the proper dental care you need, then a solution needs to be found. Fortunately, our San Jose, CA, dentist, Dr. Nidhi Sikka, offers sedation dentistry to patients of all ages.

What is dental sedation?

Sedation refers to a series of techniques that are designed to relax and calm anxious patients. Sedation dentistry comes in different forms and different levels, from mild to deep sedation. The type of sedation that people are most familiar with is “laughing gas”, or nitrous oxide. Through the use of an oxygen/nitrous administering mask, we can help calm nervous patients almost immediately.

Another commonly used form of sedation is anti-anxiety medication. Fr this option, our dentist will provide you with a prescription anti-anxiety pill such as Valium or Xanax, which you will take about one hour before your procedure. What’s great about oral sedation is that we can prescribe different strengths to provide everything from mild to more moderate effects. People with high levels of anxiety, or even those with a true dental phobia, can often benefit the most from oral sedation.

Who is a good candidate for dental sedation?

You may be surprised to hear this but patients of all ages can benefit from sedation, from children to seniors. If you are particularly nervous or anxious when it comes to getting dental treatment, then you could benefit from dental sedation here at our San Jose office.
